The mayor of the town of Izsák, southeast of Budapest, has a lot on his plate. In addition to his mayoral duties, József Mondok (Fidesz) and his family operate a gas station in the town of 6,000, and they were fortunate enough to win a government contract to operate a national tobacco shop, which they've done since 2013.

Hungary slipped down seven places in the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) prepared by anti-corruption organization Transparency International (TI), according to a TI press release. Hungary achieved its lowest score in the last six years with 48 points on a 100-point scale, and its anti-corruption performance has strikingly deteriorated in comparison to the European Union and the Central-Eastern European region. The global average on the index was 43 points in 2016.

The national board of the Socialist Party gave full support to Szeged mayor László Botka to be their party's candidate for prime minister in 2018 elections. Party chairman Gyula Molnár announced that Botka would receive full powers from the party to conduct closed door negotiations in coming weeks with other left-wing parties about gaining their support as the opposition left remains fragmented with little more than a year before voters cast their ballots.

According to the online news site index.hu the Momentum Movement (MM) has started to collect signatures on Thursday to inhibit the Hungarian government from applying for the right to organize 2024 Olympic Games in Budapest.
The campaign had a strong start on Thursday as it managed to collect over 10,000 signatures in support of holding the referendum. The youth political movement posted activists at 25 signature collection points across the capital, and must collect 138,000 signatures in the next 30 days to force a referendum.

Viktor Orban's government facilitated in vain employment in Hungary for Ukrainian, Serbian and Belarusian guest workers due to an abnormal shortage in labour last year. Foreign workers still do not come to Hungary on mass, at least certainly not into the construction trade, daily newspaper Világgazdaság (Word Economy) reports.

The Democratic Coalition (DK) party wants all public personalities to declare the source of their assets, the party's deputy leader said, backing the same call made by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in a radio interview earlier. Ágnes Vadai said Orbán and his relatives should release information on the sources of their personal wealth. Antal Rogán, the cabinet office chief, Péter Szijjártó, the foreign minister, György Matolcsy, the central bank governor, and Árpád Habony, "Orbán's personal advisor", should follow suit, she said.

Two years ago Putin came to the Hungarian capital, last February Orbán flew to Moscow and on 2nd February of this year, the Russian president is to visit his Hungarian colleague again.
