Hungary euro entry likely in 2018-2020

Hungary's euro entry will only be possible in about 2018-2020 as the central European country must first strengthen its economy, Economy Minister Gyorgy Matolcsy said on Thursday.

"If you are strong, it is good to be inside the euro zone. If you are weak, it is life-threatening," Matolcsy told a public discussion about Hungary's six-month European Union presidency, which wrapped up last month. "Given that we are weak and meanwhile the euro zone crisis has also erupted, I think Prime Minister Viktor Orban is right in saying that we can become a member of the euro zone in around 2018-2020," he said.
