freelogoOur objective is to provide English speaking readers interested in Hungary with a well balanced view of political activities in Hungary by featuring contents from various printed and online sources together with our own commentaries. We are convinced that Hungary is built on all sorts of different ideas, thoughts and opinions and, despite of the new Media Law, our aim is to provide an alternative and reliable source of information – contrary to the one-sided press of the government – for those who want to hear the voice of a free Hungary.

The Real Face of Fidesz?

According to the Hungarian Socialist Party (MSZP), the opinion voiced by János Lázár (parliamentary group leader of Fidesz) at a general meeting of the city council of Hódmezővásárhely (a middle-sized city of county rank in South Eastern Hungary having about 47 thousand inhabitants; János Lázár is currently serving as mayor) – regardless of its context – is a reflection of the absolutely anti-poor policies of Orbán’s government. Whilst the majority of Hungarians watch the EUR/HUF exchange rate with fear and worry, many Fidesz politicians could foresee the exchange rate ‘wobbled by the government’ well in advance several times, based on the transcription that was posted on the Internet last Saturday.
“I never felt shame because of what I have. I work hard. I grew up in an environment that taught me that work was not a shame, so thus no one should feel inconvenience because of the fruits of his or her hard work. People should save and build their wealth step by step. I think those who cannot do that, those who have nothing are worth nothing. Those people who do not achieve anything during their lifetimes are worth just that much [i.e. nothing] – that is all I can say. Their lives are not worth anything, respectively. That is my opinion.” - said Mr. Lázár at a general meeting of the city council. Then he added that those who maneuvered well amidst recent exchange rate moves had also been able to earn nice profits. During this argument he divulged that his son also has “a Swiss savings account”. “I hope that mothers with daughters in Hódmezővásárhely could realize (at least, based on that information of common interest[!]) that 20 years from now, János Boldizsár Lázár [Lázár’s son] may be an eligible young bachelor, provided that interest rates and also the EUR/HUF exchange rate remain favorable in the coming years. He will have a good savings account to start with.” – the politician said. Addressing a press conference on Sunday, Mr. Lázár claimed that his words were taken out of their original context and manipulated; nonetheless, he apologized to all people who may have been hurt by his statements.
The last time the right-wing politician irritated those who do not belong to the select few was in February, when the public was scandalized at the fact that his government vehicle – an Audi S8 – was equipped with a laser detector (a.k.a. LIDAR). As a consequence, Mr. Lázár was required to make a public apology.
