Democratic Coalition: No preconditions to starting of talks with Bajnai's Együtt 2014 movement

The Együtt 2014 (Together 2014) electoral movement closely associated with former prime minister Gordon Bajnai, which seeks to oust the conservative Fidesz government at the next election, will turn to the small opposition LMP party first in talks on forming pacts with opposition parties. Péter Juhász, the head of the Milla Association, one of the groups involved in the anti-government movement, told a news conference on Thursday that he welcomed comments by Benedek Jávor, LMP's parliamentary group leader, indicating a desire to explore cooperation with Együtt 2014.

Juhász said the movement would approach LMP before the party holds its congress at the weekend. He said Milla saw LMP as a natural ally in changing the culture of politics, and it saw LMP's participation in cooperation as "very important".

On the possibility of forming cooperation with the main opposition Socialist party, Juhász said their relations had yet to be clarified and it was too early to comment on when they might start talks. He said Milla had currently nothing on the agenda as far as Ferenc Gyurcsány's leftist Democratic Coalition (DK) was concerned, since Gyurcsány, a former Socialist prime minister, had made it clear that he did not want to associate with Milla.

In a statement to MTI after Juhász's comments, Csaba Molnár, the Democratic Coalition's deputy leader, said his party had no preconditions to starting of talks with the Együtt 2014 movement, and DK strove towards achieving the broadest possible collaboration from the very start. He said any dispute between Milla and the DK had been cleared up by Gordon Bajnai's speech on October 23..

Some 2.5-3 million votes are needed for a change of regime, Gordon Bajnai, president of the Homeland and Progress Association, told a forum in Budaörs on Wednesday. Bajnai said the Socialist party would be needed for an electoral pact. The Socialist Party, which has about 1.2 million voters, will play a decisive part in removing the cabinet, but that will probably not be enough for a change of government and regime, he said, adding that a solution will have to be found for next summer for all to be able to keep their identity and still join forces to unseat the government.

Only after the norms of principle and ethics have been worked out can one decide responsibly to join the movement, to be worked out within weeks, after which a platform will be drafted, he said. Bajnai called for reaching agreement on the directions of progress for at least 25 years, concluding that moderate right wingers will also be required.
