freelogoOur objective is to provide English speaking readers interested in Hungary with a well balanced view of political activities in Hungary by featuring contents from various printed and online sources together with our own commentaries. We are convinced that Hungary is built on all sorts of different ideas, thoughts and opinions and, despite of the new Media Law, our aim is to provide an alternative and reliable source of information – contrary to the one-sided press of the government – for those who want to hear the voice of a free Hungary.

Gábor Bruck: What do the leftists build upon?

bruck gaborEverything started with a futile affair, when Orbán nominated István Stumpf to become a member of the Constitutional Court weeks after Fidesz's landslide victory in 2010. Stumpf lacks a strong professional background but he is loyal to Fidesz. He served as head of the Prime Minister's Office in the first Orbán administration, 1998-2002. In the light of last two years' experience this episode seems a nuance. Leftist newspapers raised objection to his nomination, while rightists were happy with any candidate supported by Orbán. It was clear after the wrongly passed social referendum in 2008 (Fidesz launched a referendum on popular issues related to then-reforms) the Constitutional Court could hardly protest against Stumpf. ELTE's Law Faculty (Hungary's most prestigious law school) could have done something in order to set back Stumpf's nomination. Nevertheless neither professors, nor students (future judges, lawyer, prosecutors) protested. Finally, Stumpf was appointed and the law's never ending modification was started. A couple of months later the only difference between the Hungarian government and the mafia was that latter could not re-write laws to make its will legal. Hungary is like an aircraft with its wings and wheels broken. Hungary lacks an efficient media, an objective parliament and a Constitutional Court. There are no strong trade unions and determined student organizations. There is nothing against the state's paralysing power. Did we not really see what would happen? Orbán warned us in advance, but we did not pay attention. He talked about a 'central field of force' in relation to his political vision. Nobody presumed it might be a synonym of dictatorship.
