Fidesz linked Közgép under opposition’s attack

On Wednesday afternoon, the police removed LMP lawmakers and activists from Közgép headquarters. The demonstrators had chained themselves to each other and sat on the ground at the company entrance. Some of the activists held up signs saying “This is where your money disappears”.
At the demonstration, group leader Benedek Javor said they wanted to draw attention to “the country being run by a small group of oligarchs, with [Közgép] owner Lajos Simicska and chairman Zsolt Nyerges having taken over control of the economy.” The demonstrators did not block any traffic at the company entrance but the firm’s work security and fire protection director told them to leave, stating that work is under way at the company unit and their action was dangerous.
Earlier on Tuesday, opposition parties accused the Public Procurement Authority of giving preferential treatment to construction concern Közgép, which they said was linked with the ruling Fidesz party.
Understandably, Fidesz condemned LMP’s action as a blatant political attack. Gabriella Selmeczi, the ruling party’s spokeswoman, told a news conference convened in front of the entrance to the Közgép headquarters that it was “sad” to see LMP politicians and activists chaining themselves to the gates of a Hungarian company rather than defending the interests of Hungary. She said that LMP was “in the pocket of economic interest groups” that had “become resurgent in the recent past”. The hijacking of politics by economic interest groups for the purpose of settling political scores was damaging, Selmeczi said. The spokeswoman added that companies that employed Hungarians, paid their taxes in Hungary and put their profits to use in the country were those that rightly won state procurements.

What an admission that Közgép may in fact be a Fidesz company! That was a big mistake.

Deputy chairman of the Democratic Coalition (DK), Csaba Molnár, told a news conference it was clear that the significance of Közgép for the government was not its “Hungarian-ness” but rather the fact that the company was owned by Simicska, the Fidesz party’s one-time treasurer and “one of Viktor Orbán’s closest former colleagues”. He said he had documentary proof that Simicska and his wife owned at least 60 percent of Közgép through other companies. Molnár said that, thanks to the endeavours of the Democratic Coalition, “it is now not just a matter of suspicion but there is also proof that Orbán Plc [...] a state and economic power is operating in Hungary,” he said.
