Every fourth Hungaria is living in a household in arrears in rent, mortgage payments or utility costs, according to a report released by the Habitat for Humanity Hungary Foundation.
Sociologist Lea Kőszeghy told state news agency MTI that rising housing costs are causing a headache for many families.
The new report echoes the findings of a survey released by research institute Tárki on 20 June that showed 23 per cent of the population struggle to meet household bills.
Tárki said people over 60 and pensioners have the least problems with payments while those in their 50s in active employment are affected the worst, with 31 per cent falling behind.
