It seems that I was too naive when I thought that a few sentences would be enough for the media when I announced that I would step down and cease my membership of the Board of Directors of Wizz Air. I thought that the reasons I gave would get a fair and balanced treatment. It did not turn out like I wanted, so I feel that I need to state clearly the reasons for my resignation in order to prevent the deluge of questions from journalists. After writing my blog, the Hungarian News Agency (MTI), failed to mention the reasons for my resignation, mentioning only the fact that I have stepped down. This is quite unfortunate, since some online media-outlets have come up with their own ideas regarding my resignation. Since then however, the MTI has published the reasons I gave in my interview. It is true the fact that I failed to announce that I was a member of the board of directors gave ample scope for attacks. What is important here however, is that when I was member of the management I was no longer minister for financial affairs. Indeed, when I was minister, I saved the Hungarian Airlines from total collapse by taking the necessary step of reprivatisation. What has happened in 2012 is nothing short of dilettantism on the part of the government. They know that they pushed MALÉV into bankruptcy, and now they are looking for a scapegoat. As my endeavors to avert the political and personal attacks conflicted with Wizz Air’s communications policy, I decided to step down, and prove that all the attacks are baseless. Since I am no longer member of the board of directors, I am confident that I can face the insidious smear campaign of Fidesz which is designed to shift responsibility and cover their own dilettantism.
