Our objective is to provide English speaking readers interested in Hungary with a well balanced view of political activities in Hungary by featuring contents from various printed and online sources together with our own commentaries. We are convinced that Hungary is built on all sorts of different ideas, thoughts and opinions and, despite of the new Media Law, our aim is to provide an alternative and reliable source of information – contrary to the one-sided press of the government – for those who want to hear the voice of a free Hungary.

“I, as a private person having worked at the Teacher Training College, repeat: as a private person, can give the following information with regard to Ferenc Gyurcsány’s thesis: Our Dean, dr. István Gersedi was mistaken because, as I see, Ferenc Gyurcsány wrote his thesis from technology and not from biology. Namely, his tutor (dr. Dezső Rizner) was the head of the Department of Technology. The Dean came to our Institute much later, so he cannot be well-informed on that specific case.  I knew the colleague well. Actually, when the above-mentioned student studied at our Institute, there was not any Department of Biology at all; biology was taught at the Department of Botany and Zoology. I have been teaching here at the University as well as at its predecessor, the Department of Botany of the Teacher Training College since 1974.  I am sure that Ferenc Gyurcsány had a degree thesis. It is also sure that he could not have copied it from anywhere because such thing could not have happened at that time. Students worked together with the tutor in the field of natural sciences, so copying from others' works was almost excluded. As I see the title of the theme, the teacher candidate must likely not have had an experimental topic but performed literature processing or maybe on-site data collection. My wife also taught him. He was a diligent and ambitious student, showing more interest than the average.
The degree thesis might be found at the Department of Technology, although we have had the third organizational form since that time (the first was the Teacher Training College, followed by Janus Pannonius University and finally University of Pécs).  At that time, the theses were archived in the libraries of the departments but they were not required to be registered. Consequently, I would not be surprised even if Gyurcsány’s thesis had been scrapped or simply lost. I, as a teacher independent from any party declare that nobody has ever exercised any pressure on me regarding anybody’s mark or dropped even a hint to do so. My wife did not experience anything like that, either.

For your kind information,

Dr. József Majer
Professor
University of Pécs – Institute of Environmental Sciences
Department of Ecology and Hydrobiology”
