Fidesz misunderstands foreign media. They just don’t get the briefed journalists, and well-educated readers cannot be misled with crap tricks. Viktor Orbán gave an interview to the Washington Post, one of the most significant American newspapers. Hungarian prime ministers hardly ever have the opportunity to make headlines in American media. That is why we are convinced that it was a unique chance for Orbán to enhance Hungary’s image.
Unfortunately Orbán followed another strategy.
He didn’t act like either a gifted speaker or a smart politician but like a cheap attorney. He stuck to irrelevant words and ’unfair’ procedural issues as he tried to avoid giving straightforward answers. As a result the impression about Hungary didn’t get any clearer at all.
It has been analyzed several time on this blog how Fidesz’s (foreign) communication is inadequate. The times when Hungary appeared to be an exotic place are over. The Washington Post journalist was prepared about Hungary’s situation and argued really cleverly. On the other hand it should be taken into account that the Washington Post has a mostly educated, open-minded audience. To sum up, cheap tricks sometime don’t work.
