Our objective is to provide English speaking readers interested in Hungary with a well balanced view of political activities in Hungary by featuring contents from various printed and online sources together with our own commentaries. We are convinced that Hungary is built on all sorts of different ideas, thoughts and opinions and, despite of the new Media Law, our aim is to provide an alternative and reliable source of information – contrary to the one-sided press of the government – for those who want to hear the voice of a free Hungary.

Peter Tölgyessy’s Radio Show Terminated

Peter Tölgyessy’s public radio show in Magyar Rádió was ceased, reported the Hírszerző. Gazso L. Ferenc, editor-in-chief of Kossuth Rádió, informed Tölgyessy about the decision on Friday after he refused to fulfil the demand to continue the show with a pro-Fidesz analyst.

Tolgyessy believes that an Orwellian world is being built in Hungary

„It seems that an Orwellian like world is being built. First there is the Law on nationalization of private pension funds which first states that it creates freedom. Incredible. I hardly be able to say anything. Or there is the Law on Media which first states that in Hungary there is liberty of speech & media. Then it renders a 173 page long act to this ’liberty of speech & media’, which introduces sanctions hardly ever seen in the Western world before, which basically eliminates ’liberty of speech & media’ in Hungary. I am afraid that similar acts will follow in other aspects” said Peter Tolgyessy yesterday evening at the conference of the Association of Hungarian Political Sciences.

According to him the current administration is interested in providing justice instead of creating acts and in order to achieve this it changes acts case by case to achieve its own objective. „One could clearly see this process in case of the creation of the system of austerity tax measures against various sets of companies. The last twenty years seem to appear to be injustice and the failure of a democratic state in the eyes of many people. The Hungarian nation in its current state wants something like this: finally let justice prevail! As a solicitor I say that this sort of mindset does not create justice, it only gives extreme and arbitrary powers to lawmakers. In this system the real lawmaking is not the constitution, instead it exists at the level of other various acts which is sort of dissolved and creation of law is used as a tool.

According to Tolgyessy Orban’ success is dependant on two factors: „One, whether the Hungarian economy will become successful and two, how the government will interfere in people’s private life” If the economy does not speed up or the party politics will infiltrate people’s private life then „very soon there may come a huge turning point” in the goverment’s popularity. „The Fidesz party may smile with having two thirds of the seats in the Parliament but if anybody asked me 4 years ago whether the Hungarian Socialist Party would sink to 19% from 43% in its popularity I would have said that dont make me laugh. Having two thirds of the seats as a position is extremely fragile. Very quickly the government’s popularity may drop, let’s say to 25%”
