Our objective is to provide English speaking readers interested in Hungary with a well balanced view of political activities in Hungary by featuring contents from various printed and online sources together with our own commentaries. We are convinced that Hungary is built on all sorts of different ideas, thoughts and opinions and, despite of the new Media Law, our aim is to provide an alternative and reliable source of information – contrary to the one-sided press of the government – for those who want to hear the voice of a free Hungary.

Beyond democracy – The new electoral law

In our opinion, the new electoral law that is based on the one-sided manipulation of individual constituencies would ensure that the present government stays in power for a long time. The opposition can only be successful if they achieve a decisive victory at the elections. Such an electoral law cannot be democratic. The legislation, which was created to serve the interests of the government, ensures that the proportion of individual constituencies will increase significantly. Solid right wing and undecided constituencies would have an even stronger right wing character, while solid left wing constituencies would dilute into isolated urban islands. Another unacceptable trait of the reform is that it is strongly discriminating against smaller parties. With the transformation of the compensation system that was there to improve the proportion of representation of the losing candidates, and the manipulation of the time frame used to collect recommendation slips, Fidesz is threatening the election chances of both LMP and Jobbik. For us, the only acceptable way is a legislation that is based on a majoritarian interpretation of the electoral law. Ironically, it is now being dismantled through the compensation system.
