Europe may have become stronger during the six months that Hungary was EU president but Hungary itself has become weaker, the deputy leader of the Hungarian Socialist Party (MSZP), László Kovács, said on Wednesday. “Although the presidency proved to be successful in several professional fields, it is to be feared that Europe will remember these six months as a period when the Hungarian government went against the union’s common values and rules,” Kovács was quoted as saying by news agency MTI. Kovács, speaking to reporters in Budapest, blamed the rejection by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and his government of all criticism over its “dismantling democracy and the rule of law”.
