The main change in Fidesz’s and Viktor Orbán’s foreign policy has been the new attitude toward China. They realized the need for co-operation with China instead of disregard. It is not breaking news for the informed public, but it is still not obvious. We either can fight against China or we can stroke it (none of them can be felt by China because of our difference in dimensions), but it is certain we have to approach it somehow. Péter Medgyessy’s (socialist prime minister between 2002 and 2004) first steps towards China were just passionate. (Much like Viktor Orbán’s then anti-China attitude was.) Orbán’s present approach toward China is not a passion any more. It is mere recognition of the new global situation.
We can be proud of our relations with China. They are getting deeper and deeper. This new dynamic, hard-working partner will bring new flavor into the Hungarian economy. Some nationalists wish China would disappear from our economy, but it is actually our interest to have them here.
